Transitional Housing &
Wellness from Substance Use

Place of Refuge Society is a men’s long-term transitional housing program licensed by the city of Vancouver and regulated by the Assisted Living Registrar of British Columbia.

We are a Christian-based organization founded in the Mennonite tradition, and our mandate is to provide a safe environment where people can become healthy, confident, and drug-free. We honour and respect diversity and support individuals in defining their pathway to wellness.

We consider substance-use dependency to be a complex social, psychological, and physical factor contributing to illness and suffering. We further believe that individuals can recover from their substance-use challenges and lead healthy and productive lives. The residents at POR are supported by a long-term housing model that helps them successfully integrate into the community.

What We Do

Place of Refuge is a unique boutique transitional housing program that views the individual as a whole person with a vital lived history that encompasses many different aspects of their life beyond addiction - they have a story!

We provide key components, such as a model of care that treats each individual as a VIP (Very Important Person), offer a healthy food menu, a beautiful home environment, and a staff and board of directors who genuinely care. As a result, great things happen!

Place of Refuge is a learning community that, by design, fosters the value of everyone learning from one another. This belief supports an environment where our residents feel part of the conversation and part of the solution with dignity and respect.

Our transitional housing program provides a stable and caring environment for our residents, ensuring they have sufficient time to heal and return to their communities happy, healthy, and with their feet back on the ground. We offer an open-ended residential supportive program that provides our residents with up to three years of residency, demonstrating proven results.
Moreover, we provide residents with the time and space to author their hopes and dreams and to reconnect with loved ones, family, and the community. As a result, we observe long-term resident retention and a low level of relapse.
