What We Do at Place of Refuge
Place of Refuge Society operates two transitional housing programs providing twenty long-term transitional housing beds for men in the second stage of their wellness plan from substance use. We are licensed by the City of Vancouver and regulated by the Assisted Living Registrar of British Columbia. On December 15th, 2024, we officially opened our second transitional housing program, less than one block from our primary home. This new housing initiative, which one of our current residents identifies as “A Project of Love,” provides an additional ten beds for men affected by substance use who are seeking long-term and affordable housing.

Core Service
Paths to Wellness
Our mandate is to provide a safe environment for men to become healthy and confident and remain free from alcohol or drugs. Additionally, our service model provides therapeutic and life skills support for men entering or returning to the workforce or education system. We define wellness as finding a healthy self-identity through peer support and community meetings and maintaining physical and mental health by attending local recreation centres and community health clinics for counselling and additional life skills support. We honour and respect diversity and support individuals in defining their pathway to wellness.
Core Service
Housing Programs
Our two current housing programs have a fantastic reputation, and we are happy to be providing a much-needed service to our marginalized population of men seeking ongoing support from substance use, mental health challenges and financial insecurity. In short, Place of Refuge is a unique housing program providing a support model that exceeds the standard of care offered by most transitional housing programs.
Our level of care is demonstrated by the personal attention given to each resident by providing therapeutic and life-skills support tailored to the resident’s current capabilities and needs. In our communities, we are seeing a much greater number of individuals experiencing complex mental health barriers, trauma, anxiety and depression. Our program meets each individual exactly where they are in life and provides them enough time to settle into a new substance-free life where they can realize their full potential and put their hopes and dreams into action.
Place of Refuge transitional housing program offers residential supportive living for up to three years. Our resident retention is stable, and we do not observe a high turnover of men as they experience and value our housing program as their own home, feeling safe, supported and comfortable.
